Keep Cool
In Operation: 2002 – Present
Easing the burden on the power grid by retiring old, inefficient room air conditioners and dehumidifiers
Keep Cool encourages Ontarians to permanently retire and recycle their old, inefficient room air conditioners and dehumidifiers and to adopt cleaner, more efficient cooling alternatives.
Since the Keep Cool launch in 2002:
- Over 44,000 room air conditioners have been retired and responsibly recycled
- Nearly 30 MW and over 15,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases have been prevented
And in 2009, more than 1,300 dehumidifiers were collected and recycled through the expanded Keep Cool program. Also in 2009, we worked with the Toronto Community Housing Corporation to pilot the Keep Cool program with their senior citizens’ buildings. Residents were able to change over to an ENERGY STAR® room air conditioner or dehumidifier at no charge with Summerhill Impact picking up the retired units from a central location.
Program Participants receive up to a $25 gift card and free, environmentally-responsible recycling services for bringing in their old room air conditioner or dehumidifier.
Our Retail Partner, The Home Depot Canada, provides consumers with an added incentive to shop at their stores and provides potential program participants with easily accessible drop-off locations across Toronto.
Our Utility Partner, Toronto Hydro, raises public awareness of the importance of energy conservation, and achieves measurable reductions in summer peak electricity demand.
Our Industry Partnership with Total Home Comfort has been extremely successful due to the company being very proactive in its recycling of retired room air conditioners and dehumidifiers. Total Home Comfort has a number of Ozone Depleting Substance (ODS) certified technicians who trained in the responsible decommissioning and recycling of these products.
