Retire Your Ride
In Operation: 2009 – Present
Vehicle retirement and recycling program funded by the Government of Canada.
Retire Your Ride is a federal program designed to retire 1995 model year or older vehicles in an environmentally responsible manner in an effort to improve air quality and encourage the use of sustainable transportation. The program is being delivered nationally by Summerhill Impact, along with a network of partners, with funding from the Government of Canada.
Since the program launched in Spring 2009:
- Over 15,000 cars have been removed from Canada’s roads and responsibly recycled
- Reduction of over 800 tonnes of smog forming emissions
Program Participants are guaranteed that their old vehicle will be recycled in an environmentally responsible manner. They also benefit from an extensive suite of rewards toward more environmentally-responsible transportation choices.
Our Program Delivery Partners, a network of regional not-for-profit organizations, are focused and experienced in delivering environmental public education and outreach programming. They are dedicated to improving air quality, addressing climate issues and encouraging the use of sustainable transportation.
Our Program Infrastructure Partners, a network of call centres and automotive recyclers, oversee the administration of the Retire Your Ride program and ensure that all donated vehicles are retired in an environmentally responsible manner, according to a first-of-its-kind environmental auto recycling Code of Practice.
Our Reward Partners provide a choice of nearly 40 incentives to encourage owners of 1995 and older vehicles to move towards more environmentally-friendly methods of transportation, including discounts on transit passes, bicycles, car sharing memberships, 2004-and-newer cars, or even $300 cash.
