Delivered in partnership with heating, ventilating, and air conditioning contractors, Switch the ‘Stat ensures the responsible recovery of older, mercury-containing thermostats, while promoting the installation of programmable thermostats that increase energy efficiency and save money.

  • Since the program began in April 2006, Switch the 'Stat has recovered over 32,000 mercury-containing thermostats, which contained over 50,000 mercury switches. These switches represent the safe recovery of more than 125 kilograms of mercury.
  • Just one gram of mercury is enough to contaminate an eight hectare lake
  • More than 1,330 heating and cooling contractors and wholesalers are registered program participants

Home Owners are encouraged to install a programmable thermostat to increase the energy efficiency of their home, while taking advantage of a free service to properly dispose of older mercury-containing thermostats.

Participating Contractors & Wholesalers are provided with a free, easy-to-use collection system that allows them to offer their customers an extra, added-value environmental service.

PROGRAM Partners, The program is funded by The Heating Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) on behalf of thermostat manufactures that sell and/or import mercury-containing and electronic thermostats into Ontario and British Columbia.

Thermostat Manufacturers provide funding to ensure their products are properly managed when they reach the end of their life.
