Holiday Light Exchange
Encouraging Canadians to recycle their incandescent holiday light strings, in exchange for discounts on LED replacements
Incandescent holiday light strings use up to 95% more energy than newer light emitting diode (LED) replacements. These LED light strings will last seven times longer and customers will spend less money on powering their holiday lights every season.
Since its launch in 2007, the annual Holiday Light Exchange has achieved the following:
- A total of 270,419 incandescent holiday light strings have been recycled.
- 3,495,737 kWh have been saved (equivalent to providing power to 306 homes for a year)
- And 1,005 tonnes of GHGs have been prevented from entering the atmosphere (equivalent to removing 268 cars off the road)
Program participants receive free recycling of their incandescent holiday light strings and, in exchange for their old strings, they receive a discount of up to 50% on LED holiday light strings.
Our retail client, The Home Depot Canada, continues to create a positive in-store experience for customers who participate in the program. Overall, store traffic increases during the weekend of the event and the discounts handed out on the LED products leave the shelves empty.
Since 2008, our manufacturer partner, Rhino Bag, has donated over 70% of the bags used to collect the incandescent light strings for recycling and has seen a significant increase in sales by participating in the program.
