The first of its kind in Canada, Fuel Can Flip is a pilot program that rewards Ontarians for replacing their old, high-emission fuel containers with cleaner, lower-emission alternatives in an effort to decrease pollution and help the environment. The program was created by Summerhill Impact and is delivered with the support of Environment Canada, Ontario Ministry of the Environment and Imperial Oil Foundation, The Home Depot Canada, Scepter Corporation, and Bay Recycling.
Conventional fuel containers result in evaporation of gasoline, which is hazardous to the environment and human health and wastes money. There are as many as 20 million fuel containers in garages and sheds across Canada. Summerhill Impact saw an opportunity to design and deliver a pilot program to educate consumers, collect older fuel containers and incent residents to purchase new, low-emission containers that have the potential to reduce the amount of harmful smog-causing vapours released into the air by as much as 65–75 per cent, depending on human behaviours.
Through Summerhill Impact's partnership with The Home Depot Canada, the Fuel Can Flip pilot program was delivered in tandem with Mow Down Pollution, a two-week national gas-powered lawn and garden equipment retirement and recycling program. By leveraging the outreach and consumer traffic associated with an existing at-retail incentive campaign, Summerhill Impact was able to determine the best opportunities in terms of geographic range and market outreach. By training and staffing selected locations, Summerhill representatives managed both the logistical and educational/outreach aspects of the pilot.
